Few businesses are prepared for swine flu

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

The outbreak of swine flu has reminded me of this warning from the Cabinet Office in March.

It conducted research that found that only half of the country’s businesses have prepared plans to cope with the impact of a flu pandemic and warned that many could fail as a res…

European Parliament told to back off Working Time Opt Out

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

Watching Europe in action is always depressing. What a carry on. The latest installment in the ongoing farce is the collapse of a  ”conciliation” meeting between the Council, the Commission and the Parliament over the working time directive opt out.

As I have blogged previously, the European Parliament had voted to phase out 48 hour working week opt-out in three years.

Message to the superrich: it’s bad manners to moan about money

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

I can understand perfectly why those earning more than #150,000 don’t want to be subjected to a 50 per cent tax rate, particularly since there is no sound economic reason for imposing one. However, I do wish the whingeing superrich would zip it.

Entrepreneur is becoming a dirty word again

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

Go on, scram. Get out. And don’t come back. You dirty little entrepreneurs and your filthy risk-taking attitude to life are not welcome here. It is that sort of Del Boy thinking that got us into this mess in the first place.

Not quite what Alistair Darling muttered during his second Budget speech. But from the strength of the reaction from the entrepreneurial community to the Chancellor’s 50pc income tax rate you could be forgiven for assuming that he had insulted their mothers.</p…

Budget 2009: 50p tax rebellion gathering pace

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

After a slowish start the pace of revolt against the government’s new 50p top rate of income tax is growing.

Business led the way at the weekend with Lord (Digby) Jones and Sir Richard Branson taking up the cudgels. Now Lord Bilimoria (who, as the founder of Cobra beer and a fellow Chelsea season ticket holder, is a man after my own heart) has weighed in with an interview in the FT in which he la…

Though only 33 people died during the 2003 SARS outbreak in Singapore it hit the economy, which is partly reliant on tourism and business travel, hard.

While the US-Mexico border is open for business as usual with no special precautions, in Singapore, where there have been no reported cases of swine f…

The scores:

Personal timekeeping:

Vadera: 1 Clarke 0 - she turned up on time, he turned up late and so spoke second.
